General Mills' facility in Methuen has been making Yoplait brand yogurt and other tasty products since 1971. Now that yogurt comes in a new flavor – green. With the help of a $226,500 grant from the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center, the company just completed installation of a 110.7 kilowatt solar array on one of its warehouse buildings that will generate enough electricity to provide approximately 55 percent of the power consumed by the building, year-round. This will offset more than 112,000 lbs of carbon dioxide annually, and save the company money on its electric bill. The solar panels were designed and installed by Massachusetts-based Nexamp, Inc.
“The enthusiasm of the workforce and the partnership with state and local government led the way for us to install the solar panels,” said Jon Russett, energy manager in General Mills’ Supply Chain operations. “General Mills is committed to continuously improving its environmental performance.”
General Mills has also made other steps toward a more sustainable operation in Methuen by reducing the transportation of milk to the plant and redesigning packaging to use less plastic.
